King looked fearful as almost a hundred well-armed Prian rebels descended on them. His heart was pounding in his chest.

“You still sure about this?” Nelson asked.

“Not really.”

“That’s what I thought.”

“We have to trust in what Hawkins told us. The Jani wants peace, and we have to believe that.”

“And if he was wrong, or she lied? Or she’s not in town to keep her dogs in check?’

“And what about the good options?”

“You think there are any?”

“I guess we’re about to find out.”

“I can’t believe you would trust a Prian.”

“We trust some of them with our lives every day,” he replied confidently.

Nelson was silenced, having not thought of it that way. The Prian rebels encircled them entirely, forming a ten-metre perimeter. Nelson watched as their way out was finally closed off. It was the worst feeling for him, although they had bigger problems. The scene quietened down as the Prians came to a standstill and glared at the two Marines, as if expecting them to make the first move.

“We come in peace. I request an audience with your leader, the Jani of Zansi!”

There was no response, and so King held up his empty hands.

“We are but two Marines without our rifles. You can see we mean you no harm. We approached in daylight and plain sight so you would know we meant no deception!”

Still no response came.

“We mean no deceit. We are but one shuttle. We come to talk, not to fight! Will you take us to your Jani?”

One finally stepped out and closed the distance between them. At first, he didn’t look anything special, but as he drew near, they could see he was older and stronger than most.

“You will leave all your weapons here!”

Nelson was already shaking his head, yet he knew what King was about to say as he drew out his own weapons and placed them on the ground.

“Do it,” he insisted.

Nelson hesitated and looked deeply uneasy about going anywhere unarmed.

“You’re not gonna fight a hundred armed men with that, are you?” He gestured towards the Guardian and handgun the big man wore.

“Want to bet?”

“Come on, you didn’t have to follow me here, but now you have, you have to commit fully. Put them down, and let’s get this over with.”

“You really are going to get me killed, aren’t you?”

“Not you, you’ll outlive us all,” he smiled.

Nelson appreciated the sentiment, but it didn’t help to quell his fears at all.

“Do it!”

He begrudgingly put his weapons down and felt something push into his back. Several Prians had come forward and were shepherding them on with the muzzles of their rifles. They were led back into the outskirts of the city and paraded through the streets with guards all around. They couldn’t tell if they were being led to the Jani as they’d asked or to their executions.

“Please don’t let me regret this,” whispered Nelson.

“Just stay calm, and don’t look for any trouble.”

“Don’t look for trouble?” he laughed, “You just put us into the jaws of it.”

“Nobody forced you to come along.
